In recent weeks, the national recommended prices of petrol and diesel have finally fallen below 2 euros. At cheap gas stations you can even go for 1.75 euros. But that won’t be long now…

ABN Amro economist Hans van Cleef sketches a gloomy scenario for the near future when it comes to fuel prices. In an interview with de Volkskrant, he indicates that the current, relatively favorable price level has two causes. On the one hand, the panic about the war in Ukraine has subsided and large stocks of petrol and diesel have been built up all over Europe. Secondly, we are experiencing an economic downturn worldwide. This is almost always accompanied by a reduced demand for car fuels. This also depresses market prices.

Despite these developments, Van Cleef foresees that the prices of petrol and diesel will soon rise again. The EU has decided not to import oil from Russia from Sinterklaas Eve, December 5. According to the economist, this will undoubtedly lead to more fuel shortages: “Certainly with regard to diesel, for that we are much more dependent on Russia than for petrol.” According to Van Cleef, we will undoubtedly see this reflected in the prices at the pump. He therefore recommends filling up the tank before December 5.”
