Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, recently announced on Threads that the company is expanding its mute filters to apply to more parts of the app than ever before.
Known as Hidden Words, this feature previously only applied to posts directed at you, allowing you to mute specific words or phrases from appearing in your replies. As of today, the feature has been expanded to include your timeline, search results, profiles, and replies among other posts.
Hidden Words serves as a simple filter. By adding a word, phrase, or even an emoticon to the list, the app will hide any post containing that content from your view. In addition to managing a custom list, the app also automatically filters out posts with certain words. However, this feature can be disabled in the settings.
Mosseri also shared that the company is developing further moderation tools. Users will soon have the ability to choose who can quote them, which could help reduce unwanted attention and harassment. Additionally, users will be able to mute notifications on their posts, allowing them to receive notifications other than those related to the posts they choose.
The expanded Hidden Words feature is now available to all users. The other features are currently in testing and may only be accessible to select users at this time.
