At the age of 39, Fernando Alonso makes his comeback in Formula 1. Despite his recent cycling accident, the Spaniard says he is physically prepared for the challenge, but saving energy will be crucial anyway, according to Alonso and that has nothing to do with his age.
With 23 races on the F1 2021 calendar, not only the cars and parts but also the team members and drivers will be presented with an enormous physical challenge. There have never been more races on the F1 calendar, which means that the drivers will have to ensure that they remain physically ready throughout the very long season.
“One of the challenges this year, not just for me but for everyone on the team and in the paddock, will be the 23 races,” Alonso told ‘DAZN’.
“We all have to keep that number of races in mind because you have to try to save energy throughout the year when possible.”
“Even during the months of June, August, September, even when you feel fresh, the more energy you save the better you will be in November and December.”
According to Alonso, the differences will often be small this season and the small aspects such as being more or less physically ready will also determine the results later in the season.
“The grid is very competitive at the moment, that is something we realize and we will have to maximize everything. We will have to be efficient so that we do not exhaust ourselves unnecessarily. ”
“If we want to achieve a lot of points, we will have to strive for perfection every race weekend,” the Spaniard concluded.
