Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said that after winning only once in the first four races this season, Red Bull is almost obliged to beat Mercedes in Monaco.
For the first time in a long time, it seems that Red Bull really has the material to make it difficult for Mercedes, or maybe even beat it. Still, the ‘Silberpfeile have taken the upper hand after four races.
Because despite the fact that Max Verstappen has led more laps so far this season than Lewis Hamilton, the Dutchman only managed to write one of the four races to his name. In the constructors’ championship, Red Bull is already dependent on chasing and although the season is still a long time, Christian Horner definitely wants to see results in Monaco.
“I think every Grand Prix this year, except Bahrain, there was less than a tenth of a second between us and pole position,” said Horner.
“It was phenomenally close, and in Monaco we have to make sure we beat Mercedes. But we know it will be incredibly difficult. ”
The Red Bull team boss has seen signs in Barcelona that the RB16B can perform well in Monaco. He also added that Mercedes’ victories in Portugal and Spain did not just come out of the blue.
“The third sector in Barcelona sometimes gives a good indication of what the car could be like in Monaco, hopefully we’ll be competitive there.”
“I think the Mercedes we’ve seen since Bahrain have been better at race pace than ours in every Grand Prix, and I think their tire degradation has been better than ours,” Horner explained.
“We knew the last two circuits (Spain and Portugal) would be in their favor. They delivered on that too, but we are much closer together and I think if we can still find some pace, it is still very exciting between the two cars. ”?
