In the past, the choice for a small car was huge: almost every brand offered one. Slowly the car brands dropped out. There is no more Suzuki Celerio, no Opel Karl, and no Ford Ka. And soon the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108 – with the same technology as the current Aygo – will disappear into the history books. But there will be a new Toyota Aygo X. The Japanese still see a future for a compact car, which means that the Aygo X no longer has a French accent. Oh yes, you pronounce that X as Cross.

With automatic and manual gearbox

The new Toyota Aygo X gets a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine with 72 hp and Toyota promises an average consumption of 1 to 21.3. It is not only available with a manual gearbox, but also with a CVT automatic transmission. If you put the new Aygo X next to the old model, it looks like that bridge beeper who comes back after the summer holidays as a tall lanky with a beard in his throat. The car has become no less than 23 centimeters larger and (great for the rear passengers) the wheelbase grew by 9 centimeters. It’s thanks to the new platform on which the Aygo sits, which is already known from the Yaris and Yaris Cross.

Price of the Toyota Aygo X (2022)

The Toyota Aygo X will come to the Netherlands in the spring of 2022. Toyota has not yet announced an exact price, but it does reassure us: there will be an Aygo X under 16,000 euros. The full price list and private lease costs will be revealed in 2021. The Aygo X is more expensive than a Kia Picanto, which is in the price list from 14,995 euros. The Hyundai i10 is also cheaper, which costs from 13,635 euros. But neither can be ordered with 17- or 18-inch (!) wheels. And that is possible with the Aygo X. There will be no electric Aygo X, by the way.

The Aygo is affordable, but the Auto Review newsletter is free! Are you in?

Wirelessly charge your phone

It has been the case for some time that you don’t have to suffer in small cars. But Toyota is going for the superlative luxury. For example, it is possible to wirelessly charge your phone in your Aygo X. The interior has improved considerably. In the middle of the dashboard is a large multimedia screen of 9 inches. The Aygo X has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can connect your phone to the system. Real-time traffic information is also possible. Although these features are not standard on the basic version.

Even adaptive cruise control is available

Anyone who thinks that a city car is not safe can step into an Aygo X with peace of mind and without praying the rosary. Depending on the version, the car recognizes traffic signs and keeps an eye on pedestrians and cyclists in the dark. Automatic high beams are also available and even adaptive cruise control (including Lane Keeping Assist) is an option.
