Despite his years of experience in Formula 1, Sergio Perez is still experiencing a lot of problems during his first season with the Red Bull F1 team and as a teammate of Max Verstappen. According to the Mexican, it is very difficult to be Verstappen’s teammate.
In recent years, Max Verstappen has built up a reputation for wrecking his teammates. Several teammates were replaced mid-season due to underperformance. They were often drivers with little experience in the sport, but the very experienced Sergio Perez also finds that it is a difficult task to be Max Verstappen’s teammate.
“It’s not easy to be Max’s teammate because he is one with the car,” said Perez. “He really performs at a very high level.”
Perez also has to fall short of Max Verstappen on an almost constant basis this season. Both during qualifying and the race, Verstappen almost constantly performs better and that weighs on you mentally as a driver, according to Perez.
“We have a unique car and in that area it is not easy,” said Perez, who once again makes it clear that Red Bull’s F1 car mainly suits Max Verstappen’s driving style.
“It’s no secret and you have to be mentally very strong every day. I think one of my strengths is to make the most of it and try to reach the maximum every Sunday.”
Like his predecessors, Perez is experiencing a lot of difficulties adapting to Red Bull’s car.
“I had a lot of difficulties adapting to the car, although it wasn’t too dramatic,” said Perez. “Obviously it’s a very good package, a very competitive package and Max shows that with the car. It’s one of the best cars, maybe the best car.”
Perez’s focus during the remaining races of the season is on trying to support Max Verstappen as much as possible in his battle with Lewis Hamilton for the title. In the last race he did that excellently by fighting hard with Hamilton and eventually finishing in front of Hamilton and thus taking points.
