The Indy 500 car race is one of the most famous endurance events on the racetrack. It also produces spectacular images every year, and that will be no different in 2021.

When Graham Rahal crashed into the circuit wall, the wheel came off his car. The wheel rumbled across the track where Conor Daley was just coming out of the corner. The racing driver tried in vain to avoid the vehicle, but got the wheel full on the front of his car. Fortunately, the cars in the Indy 500 also have an aeroscreen like in Formula 1, so Daley was not endangered.

The Indy 500 was won by Helio Castroneves, his fourth victory in the meantime.

In the final phase, Castroneves trumped the Spaniard Alex Palou, who finished second in less than half a second. Frenchman Simon Pagenaud finished third.

The Brazilian, nicknamed ‘Spiderman’, already triumphed in Indianapolis in 2001, as a debutant, and in 2002 and 2009. He can call himself co-record holder with his fourth victory in the ‘Indy 500’. Americans AJ Foyt (1961, 1964, 1967, 1977), Al Unser (1970, 1971, 1978, 1987) and Rick Mears (1979, 1984, 1988, 1991) also won the famous American car classic four times.

The Indy 500 was also awarded a post-race record with 100,000 supporters at the track, making it the largest event after the coronavirus pandemic.
