On the official Formula 1 website Ross Brawn, F1 general manager, looks back at the opening race of the 2021 F1 season and thinks the tone has been set for an exciting season.
Brawn finds it encouraging that there was little difference between Red Bull and Mercedes on the one hand and Verstappen and Hamilton on the other. The game was therefore decided by strategic choices and there Mercedes finally took the upper hand by a slightly more aggressive approach.
“Both Verstappen and Hamilton were worthy winners, but in the end it was Hamilton who drove the better race. Verstappen got a little nervous in the end, ”said Brawn.
“But make no mistake, this was a fantastic race, the kind where victory was decided on the smallest details.”
“The changes in the rules during the winter seem to have brought the field a bit closer together. With the teams starting to focus on next year’s car fairly quickly, it could be that no one will really take the lead and we have an epic season ahead of us. ”
“When Verstappen overtook Hamilton he couldn’t stay around long enough to make one attack after another because the tires overheated. We are trying to remedy that with the 2022 regulations, so the future is bright. ”
The Brit also believes that Red Bull has made the right decision to let Verstappen give up his place.
“If Verstappen had taken a sufficient lead after a violation and won the race, that would have left a bad taste. We don’t want races to be won that way, ”he says.
Hopefully we can agree with Ross Brawn and get ready for an exciting battle during the next race at the Imola circuit where the Emilia-Romagna GP will take place on April 18.
