The Google Pixel 8a is an appealing choice if you are seeking a sleek smartphone at an affordable price. However, there are several alternatives available. Here, we present the best options for you.
Google Pixel 8a Alternatives: The Best Options
Out of the blue, Google unveiled the Pixel 8a this week. The smartphone was initially set to debut during I/O 2024 (scheduled for May 14), but it’s now available for orders. Priced at 549 euros, the device has seen enhancements in various areas. This year introduces a 256GB version priced at 609 euros.
The Google Pixel 8a boasts a rounder design, faster processor, improved cameras, and a better screen. More importantly, the phone is promised seven years of updates. However, there are still other noteworthy alternatives in this price bracket. Here’s a rundown of some of them.
1. Google Pixel 8
Surprisingly, Google’s main competitor to the Pixel 8a is none other than the Pixel 8 itself. The “standard” Pixel 8, available since last year, has significantly dropped in price and is only slightly costlier than the new Pixel 8a. This makes it a solid alternative, especially due to its promised seven-year Android updates.
Moreover, the Pixel 8 is slightly more premium. While the screen size is similar, the bezels are slimmer. The cameras are marginally better, and the battery, albeit larger, charges faster. The Pixel 8a may come in brighter colors, but there are few reasons to prefer it over its pricier sibling.

2. Samsung Galaxy A55
If the 549 euros price tag is a bit too steep for you and you’re looking to spend less on a new smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy A55 offers a great alternative. The device features a nice screen, fast hardware, and a large 5000 mAh battery that can easily last all day.
Keep in mind that the Samsung Galaxy A55 is much bigger than the Google Pixel 8a, boasting a 6.6-inch display instead of 6.1 inches. Additionally, its cameras may not be as good, and Samsung’s update support is shorter. However, receiving four major Android upgrades and five years of security patches is still impressive in this price range.

3. NothingPhone (2)
Currently priced almost on par with the Pixel 8a, the NothingPhone (2) provides an alternative for those who find the Pixel’s design uninspiring and prefer a more unique-looking device. Featuring a transparent back with the Glyph interface, LEDs illuminate when notifications are received or while charging.
With hardware comparable to the Pixel 8a, the NothingPhone (2) is powered by a robust Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip and boasts fast wired and wireless charging. However, it’s less practical due to its 6.7-inch screen size and does not have top-tier cameras.

4. Google Pixel 7a
You also have the option of purchasing the preceding Pixel model, the Pixel 7a. Although it’s a year old, the Pixel 7a still offers a great Android experience at a more affordable price. While it may not offer as extensive updates, it remains a solid choice.
The Pixel 7a features an excellent compact screen, a smooth Tensor G2 processor, and quality cameras for great photos. With 128GB of storage, there’s ample space for your files. Battery life is also decent.

5. OnePlus Nord 3
Lastly, we’d like to mention the OnePlus Nord 3. Priced considerably lower than the new Pixel 8a, the OnePlus Nord 3 offers a comprehensive feature set. Boasting a sleek design, good display, powerful hardware, and a long-lasting battery, it’s a solid pick.
A standout feature of the OnePlus Nord 3 is its rapid charging capability. The device can reach full charge in just half an hour, with 60% charge achieved in just fifteen minutes. These charging speeds surpass what Google phones offer.
However, the Nord 3 does have its drawbacks, including shorter update support, slightly inferior cameras compared to the Pixel 8a, and busier software.
