Google did not wait for the I/O 2024 conference, announcing the release of the new Pixel 8a smartphone immediately after the presentation of the new iPads. The device inherited a lot from the older models in the series and received a number of significant improvements compared to its predecessor.
The device features a 6.1-inch OLED screen with Full HD+ resolution, a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and a peak brightness of up to 2000 nits when displaying HDR content. It is protected by tempered Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Inside, it boasts the flagship Google Tensor G3 processor with a Titan M2 security chip and 8 GB of LPDDR5X RAM. A 4492 mAh battery with support for 18-watt wired charging is responsible for its autonomy. Wireless charging is also provided. The smartphone includes stereo speakers and is water-resistant.
The new main camera has a resolution of 64 megapixels, an f/1.89 lens aperture, and optical image stabilization. There is also a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera with a viewing angle of 120 degrees. The screen features a built-in 13 MP front camera with a wide viewing angle of 96.5 degrees and support for video recording in 4K @ 30 fps.
Google Pixel 8a includes most of the AI features available in older models. These include Magic Eraser, Audio Magic Eraser, Night Sight, Photo Unblur, Best Take, Circle to Search, and the local chatbot Gemini. Similar to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the new product will receive system and security updates for 7 years.
The Google Pixel 8a will go on sale on May 14 for £349 for the 128GB version, while the 256GB version will cost £399.
