At Aston Martin, they had informed the FIA that they wanted a ‘right of review’ concerning a penalty imposed on Fernando Alonso for a collision with Carlos Sainz. However, the stewards ultimately rejected this request.
During the sprint race in China, a collision occurred between Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz. Alonso lost several places due to a flat tyre, and he also received a time penalty and three penalty points. While the time penalty had little impact on his result, accumulating three penalty points is significant. If a driver amasses twelve penalty points within a twelve-month period, they will face a race suspension.
At Aston Martin, they disagreed with the punishment and requested a ‘right of review’ to have the case re-examined. However, presenting new evidence that was not available at the time of the initial decision is crucial. Aston Martin believed they had new evidence indicating that Alonso could have been given more space in the situation, but the stewards did not agree.
“Although the incident was viewed from a different angle, it did not provide additional visual perspective beyond what we had previously seen,” said a statement from the stewards, who subsequently dismissed the request for a ‘right of review’. Therefore, Alonso’s time penalty and three penalty points stand.
