A disappointed Fernando Alonso announced after the sprint race that he will not punish Lewis Hamilton for ruining the race of other drivers in the first corner in Miami because he is not Spaniard.
During the first corner of the sprint race in Miami, Fernando Alonso was surprised by Lewis Hamilton, who suddenly appeared on the inside and forced him towards Lance Stroll, who in turn knocked Lando Norris out of the race.
Alonso’s race was also a disaster and the two-time world champion was unable to achieve more than seventeenth place. During the sprint race in Shanghai, Alonso was given a ten-second penalty after an incident with Carlos Sainz and he thinks Lewis Hamilton might get away with it.
“We’ll see what they decide. I don’t think they will decide anything because he is not Spaniard,” Alonso told ‘DAZN.’ “But I think he ruined the race for a few people, especially Norris, who had a very fast car and was out in that incident.”
Alonso turned out to be right because Hamilton was indeed not penalized. He says that once he was at the back, he did not want to take any risks by overtaking cars because he had already suffered a few penalties in recent races.
“Maybe I wasn’t punished today, but I always get punished,” he said. “Same today. I was behind Ocon, I could maybe take a risk and overtake him, but logically I won’t take a risk to avoid being penalized.”
“So I tried to finish the race, which is 19 laps, and go back to the team to talk about the changes.”
“We had no interest in the sprint race,” he said. “We just went to check the relegation and things for tomorrow and at the end it worked. For us it was free practice, it wasn’t really a race.”
“Now the important part of the race begins, qualifying and tomorrow the 57 laps. I think we can draw a conclusion from this sprint for the parc fermé that is now opening and see if we can improve the car a little bit.”
