Last week it was announced that Fernando Alonso has extended his contract with Aston Martin until the end of 2026. Alonso now admits that discussions have also been held with other teams.
Fernando Alonso kept saying that Aston Martin was his priority to continue racing in Formula 1 in 2025, but the two-time F1 champion was also linked with Mercedes and Red Bull, among others. In response, Alonso stated that in addition to Aston Martin, he had also had discussions with other teams, but without going into detail about which teams he had spoken to.
“Yes, I have also spoken to other teams,” said Fernando Alonso, whose interests are managed by the ever-flamboyant Flavio Briatore. “I think something like that is normal when you start negotiations, you have to do some balancing and test the market.”
“You have to listen to everyone. It is a normal procedure, I think it is fair to listen to all the proposals and see how the market evolves.”
“I never thought about saying goodbye to Formula 1. Besides, when I stop Formula 1 I think I will race somewhere else, in the Dakar or something.”
“For me it is difficult to imagine a life without a steering wheel in my hands. That will never happen, at least not in the short term.”
“No, I think I was 99 percent confident that I would still race next year, so retiring was not an option for me.”
