Using public WiFi networks is not without risks. Here’s how you can use the internet in public as safely as possible.
Public WiFi networks: How to Limit the Dangers
Do you enjoy sitting in a café, public transport, or the library? Then it’s great that you can use the internet for free. While it’s nice that such locations offer free internet access, malicious individuals can also take advantage of this. If you’re not vigilant, criminals can easily track your internet use and steal personal data.
Tip 1: Avoid Public WiFi Networks
Our first tip is to avoid public WiFi networks as much as possible. You’re never sure who controls the network and what information they can access about you. Instead, use your mobile data, which connects you directly to the reliable internet network of your mobile provider.
If you’re planning to watch a movie, download large files, or make video calls, it may cost you a lot of data. In such cases, using public WiFi might seem tempting, but make sure to follow the tips below.
Tip 2: Use a VPN
You’re probably familiar with a VPN (Virtual Private Network). With a VPN connection, the communication between your smartphone, tablet, or other device and the public WiFi network’s router is encrypted, ensuring your online activities remain private.
There are numerous VPN services available, such as NordVPN, ExpressVPNor Proton VPN. While many of these services require a subscription, there are also free providers in the Play Store. Simply open the VPN app and follow the steps to set up the VPN connection in minutes. Ensure the VPN is active before connecting to a public WiFi network.
Tip 3: Check the Network
Malicious individuals may create public WiFi networks with names identical to real networks at certain locations. Even the login screens may appear similar. If you don’t see a login screen, we advise against connecting to the network, especially if there are multiple networks with the same name.
It’s also beneficial to verify if the location you’re in provides a public WiFi network. Look for signs like a window sticker reading ‘Free WiFi’ at a coffee shop, a WiFi network mentioned on the restaurant menu, or simply ask the staff. This way, you can be certain you’re connecting to the correct network.
Tip 4: Prevent the Use of Personal Data
Once connected to a WiFi network, it’s wise to avoid activities involving personal or sensitive information. Refrain from logging into your banking app, making online payments, or entering passwords on login pages. By doing so, even if someone is monitoring your online activities, they won’t gain any useful information.
Tip 5: Limit Browser Permissions
You can implement the last tip via the Settings app on your device. Navigate to ‘Apps’, then ‘Manage apps’, and select the browser you use. Proceed to ‘App permissions’ and disable unnecessary permissions like ‘Photos & videos’, ‘Microphone’, and ‘Camera’. This way, your browser will block any unauthorized access to these functions by online criminals.
