With the launch of the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung has committed to providing 7 years of software support for the series, including operating system and security updates. While Samsung wasn’t the first to do so – Google promised 7 years of support for the Pixel 8 series, OnePlus believes that anything beyond 5 years is unnecessary resource allocation.
We recently had the opportunity to speak with Samsung’s VP Nicholas Porter and asked him about the decision to offer 7 years of support. Samsung’s analysis of consumer feedback revealed that extending support adds significant value to a smartphone.
This added value justifies the necessary maintenance overhead.
Samsung’s research indicates that people are holding onto their phones longer these days, making it sensible for manufacturers to extend software support.
Furthermore, Samsung believes that even for those who may not prioritize extended support, they will still benefit from enhanced security and optimal performance of their phones for years to come, resulting in an improved user experience overall.
It’s worth noting that Samsung offers 5 years of support for its latest A-series phones – the Galaxy A55 and Galaxy A35. However, the company is confident that the hardware in its latest flagship devices is sufficiently future-proof to remain functional and relevant in 2031.
