When Google announced Gemini, it also introduced its tiers, one of which is called Nano and works entirely on the device. The company initially intended to reserve Gemini Nano exclusively for the Pixel 8 Pro, even though the ‘vanilla’ Pixel 8 has the same chipset.
However, in response to online backlash, Google has altered its approach. It appears that Gemini Nano may now be available for the Pixel 8 as well and will come as a developer preview with the next Pixel Feature Drop, anticipated in June.
Google has acknowledged the significant interest in Gemini Nano from Pixel 8 owners – that’s one way of looking at it. The company once again clarifies how larger language models like this can lead to varying user experiences on phones with different memory specifications. Therefore, it conducted thorough testing on the Pixel 8.
Gemini Nano will power two new features: Summarize in Recorder and Smart Reply in Gboard. It will be available on both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, and they will even function offline since they are powered by the Gemini Nano device.
