Will we soon see Fernando Alonso driving for Red Bull Racing, possibly as a teammate of Max Verstappen? According to former F1 pilot Ralf Schumacher, it could just be possible.
Fernando Alonso surprised friend and foe last year with what he managed to achieve in the Aston Martin F1 car. Several podium places, but a victory was not forthcoming and now it is precisely what Alonso wants again: winning in Formula 1.
In that sense, it is logical that Fernando Alonso has not yet recommitted to Aston Martin. The two-time F1 champion has made it clear that an extended stay with Aston Martin is his ‘first choice’, but there could still be a lot of movement on the driver market in the coming months.
For example, there is a race seat available at Mercedes and what happens at Red Bull remains to be seen. Sergio Perez’s future is uncertain and officially Max Verstappen is still under contract for years, but nevertheless it could suddenly be that Verstappen leaves. In that sense, Red Bull would now have their sights set on Fernando Alonso.
By attracting Alonso, they could bring in a competitive driver so that they would still have a top driver even in the event of a sudden departure of Max Verstappen. According to former F1 pilot Ralf Schumacher, serious work is already being done behind the scenes on ‘the Alonso track’.
“There seem to be a lot of intentions in the background to get Fernando Alonso into a Red Bull cockpit so that they still have a strong driver if Max Verstappen leaves the team,” says Ralf Schumacher in conversation with ‘Sky Germany’. “There are the rumors and these rumors and information are quite good.”
“If Red Bull has a car that can win, that is something Alonso really wants.”
“You also saw again last weekend how fast he was, how he shifted gears, how he could prevent George Russell from overtaking him.”
“He knows what he wants and I think he would fit in well with the team.”
