McLaren boss Zak Brown has called on the international motorsport federation FIA for more openness about recent investigations. The American said this during the press conference of team bosses at the Australian Grand Prix, which will be held this weekend. McLaren also confirmed on the sidelines that their CEO’s contract will be terminated until 2030.
“We live in 2024 and no longer in 1984, which means total transparency is needed,” the American said during the press moment in the run-up to the third round of the world championship. “Sports cannot move forward if important questions remain unanswered.”
“I recognize that confidentiality in internal investigations is important, but people must have confidence in the FIA’s procedures,” Brown said. “People need to know that issues are being independently investigated and that all parties have been heard.”
The FIA acquitted chairman Mohammed Ben Sulayem earlier this week of alleged interference in two races, but the FIA provided little explanation for the ruling and declined to comment. Shortly afterwards, Susie Wolff, the wife of Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, filed a criminal complaint against the FIA. She claims her reputation has been damaged by a conflict of interest investigation. The FIA also gave no explanation about this.
The federation has also not reported anything about the complaint that Red Bull employees allegedly submitted to the FIA. According to various media, the woman has been suspended by Red Bull and has appealed against the acquittal of Red Bull team boss Christian Horner of inappropriate behavior.
Contract extension
The 52-year-old Brown is the successor at McLaren to the legendary Ron Dennis, who was forced to resign at the end of 2016 after a power struggle with the shareholders. “I am very pleased to continue to lead McLaren Racing and be part of a racing team with such a history,” said Brown.
Last season, McLaren finished fourth in the Constructors’ World Championship. The Englishman Lando Norris and the Australian Oscar Piastri occupy the seats of the eight-time world champion among the constructors. Italian Andrea Stella has been the team boss since the end of 2022.
