The European court of first instance on Wednesday completely reversed the European Union's sanctions against former F1 driver Nikita Mazepin, the son of a Russian oligarch. According to the judge, his origin is insufficient to justify the punitive measures against him due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The European Union in March 2022 placed chemical billionaire Dmitry Mazepin and his son Nikita on the blacklist, which was created after the annexation of Crimea in 2014. A total of 1,752 people and 425 entities were denied entry to the EU. Their assets were frozen in a total of 27 Member States.
Nikita Mazepin was included on the list because of his father, an influential businessman and the manager of the chemical group Uralchem, whose activity is a source of income for the Russian government. The racing driver went to justice to have the actions of the Council of the European Union nullified.
Mazepin was sidelined from F1 team Haas after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In April 2022, Italian authorities seized a villa worth more than 100 million euros from the Russian.
Mazepin was previously proven right before the same European court in March 2023. An interim order was then issued suspending some of the sanctions against him. From then on he was allowed to participate in competitions again.
