These days, we are witnessing a significant amount of innovation in display technology. At the recently concluded MWC 2024, we were introduced to various types of displays, including transparent displays, bendable displays, and more. It appears that Samsung is currently working on a new flexible display that can roll up.
Samsung’s New Flexible Roll-Up Display Technology
Today, the team at MySmartPrice discovered a new patent filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), although it was not explicitly stated whether the patent pertains to a smartphone, tablet, or TV.
The patent drawings provide a glimpse into the functionality of the upcoming device. In FIG. 1A, the device is shown closed up, while in FIG. 1B, it is beginning to open up or stretch out. FIG. 1C displays the device fully open, while FIGS. 2A and 2B focus on the fully open screen. Additionally, FIGS. 3A and 3B highlight the screen itself, while FIG. 4A and FIG. 4B show the hinge when the device is open, and FIG. 4C displays the hinge in a closed state.
Samsung’s Other Developments in Display Technology
It’s worth noting that this is not Samsung’s first venture into rollable displays. A recent patent filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) showcased a cylindrical roller design for the display.
Additionally, Samsung is exploring a third type of foldable smartphone with a dual-folding display. Another patent filed with WIPO hinted at a smartphone with a screen that may stretch to the right.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that the presence of a patent does not guarantee that the concept will materialize into a future product. Samsung frequently files patent applications, and not all ideas will necessarily come to market.
