Jorge Prado (GasGas) started the new motocross season well on Sunday. The Spanish world champion won the first Grand Prix of the season in Patagonia. Prado won the MXGP class ahead of Frenchman Romain Febvre (Kawasaki) and Slovenian Tim Gajser (Honda).
Prado won the first series in Villa La Angostura and came second in the second series. Febvre came second and third respectively, Gajser won the second series and came fifth in the first series. In the standings, Prado leads with 54 points, ahead of Febvre (51 points) and Gajser (51 points).
No Belgians took part in the MXGP class. Jago Geerts and Brent Van Doninck crashed during the qualifications on Saturday. The first suffered fractures to his collarbone and elbow, while the second broke his femur. Geerts returns to Belgium to consult a specialist there, Van Doninck is already going under the knife in Argentina.
In the MX2 category, Lucas Coenen (Husqvarna) won the qualifications on Saturday, but was less lucky on Sunday. The seventeen-year-old Brussels resident fell in the first series and came third in the second series. He finished eleventh in the final standings of the Grand Prix. After finishing sixth and tenth, brother Sacha Coenen finished eighth in the final rankings.
The victory went to the Dutchman Kay de Wolf (Husqvarna), the German Simon Längenfeller (GasGas) and the Dane Mikkel Haarup (Triumph). De Wolf leads the World Cup standings with 56 points, ahead of Längenfelder (50 pts) and the Frenchman Thibault Benistant (40 pts), who finished fourth on Sunday. Lucas Coenen is seventh with 30 points, Sacha Coenen is ninth with 28 points.
The second Grand Prix, that of Spain, will take place on March 24 in Intu Xanadu-Arroyomolinos, in the south of Madrid.
