Despite my initial disappointment with HMD not having a booth at MWC2024, many companies followed a similar approach at the event this year. Notable smartphone players like vivo and OnePlus, as well as others, chose to rent space or book hotel rooms for their meetings during the MWC as most of their significant partners were likely present in Barcelona.
Similarly, Jolla also opted for this strategy and conducted meetings with the press and partners in hotels.
Although Jolla did not unveil a new phone, they introduced a gadget that could be significant in the near future. After restructuring to be more competitive in the Western market, Jolla now operates in several divisions: one focusing on automotive software, another running Sailfish, and the third aiming to revolutionize AI usage.
Jolla representatives unveiled a small black box to TechCrunch in the lobby of a hotel in Barcelona. This gadget is specifically designed to work with popular AI technology and focuses on enhancing privacy and security. The black box serves as a private cloud and AI router that facilitates AI queries. It serves as a personal server reconfigured for the generative AI era to mitigate the risks associated with integrating AI directly into smartphones.
While the concept may seem unclear at first, TechCrunch covered the device’s potential in detail. Jolla has named this prototype “Jolla Mind²,” and it is envisioned to be the digital assistant of the future. The official announcement is expected on May 20, with the product anticipated to hit the market in Q4 2024.
