Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) set the fastest time on the second day of testing at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain. With his 1'29”921, the Spaniard from Ferrari even approached the time that Max Verstappen set last year to take pole position (1'29”708).
Sainz completed 84 laps with a top time of 1:29.921, holding off the Mexican Sergio Perez (Red Bull, + 0.758) and the British Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes, + 1.145). Three-time and reigning world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who set the fastest time on the first day of testing on Wednesday, remained sidelined. The Dutchman was initially scheduled to drive his RB20 in the afternoon, but Red Bull decided to keep Perez in the car. The Mexican had barely been able to complete good laps in the morning session. A fire at the front of the RB20 caused Perez some problems.
