Nio is a very young brand from China. However, after driving the Nio EL6 for a week, we suspect that Nio has been developing electric cars in complete secrecy for much longer.
But no, Nio was founded in 2014 and is therefore 10 years old. Two years later, Nio released its first car, the EP9 sports car. The Nio EL6 we drove was added in 2023. The driving characteristics are impressive, especially considering how young Nio is.
In Comfort mode, the Nio EL6 drives more comfortably than the Nio ET5, which has been fine-tuned. Imperfections are neatly smoothed out. The steering could provide a little more resistance for our taste, but straight on the highway you don’t hear us complaining. The electric SUV feels stable and sturdy.
Speed a cannabis
The Sport mode provides more experience. The chassis becomes noticeably stiffer and the steering more direct. That is of course the intention, but often enough we drive cars where the difference between comfort and sport mode is hardly noticeable. Not in the EL6. As if it has used speed, the SUV responds so alertly to the ‘accelerator pedal’. And when cornering quickly, you forget that you are driving an SUV that weighs more than 2,300 kilos.
In Sport plus mode you can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. If you switch the driving mode back to Comfort, it is as if the Nio EL6 has switched from speed to cannabis. Suddenly the car feels very relaxed and calm. Yes, even a bit languid.
