Sarah Bovy was elected Driver of the Year 2023 during the RACB Awards on Thursday evening. A historic result, because never before has a woman been elected Driver of the Year.
The 34-year-old Bovy is active in endurance racing. She follows in the footsteps of Stoffel Van Doorne, who was voted Driver of the Year last year. In the final standings, Sara Bovy precedes Thierry Neuville and the brothers Laurens and Dries Vanthoor.
On Thursday evening, everyone who has anything to do with Belgian motorsport gathered in Hall 10 of Brussels Expo for the annual RACB Awards ceremony. From drivers to organizers to team bosses and motorsport journalists and federation officials.
Sarah Bovy was surprisingly voted RACB Driver of the Year. Bovy beat rally driver Thierry Neuville, who won two World Cup rallies this year. The 34-year-old Bouvy performed excellently within the Iron Dames team in endurance racing. With several pole positions in the GTE Am category, a fourth place in the GTE Am class in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the driving force behind her team’s victory in Bahrain and vice world champion GTE Am in the WEC, Sarah Bovy showed herself in high-quality international competitions and a worthy ambassador for Belgian motorsport.© Porsche / Juergen Tap
The title of ‘Rookie of the Year’ was awarded to Lorens Lecertua. In his first season in GT, the young Belgian managed to get into the spotlight in the Alpine Elf European Cup. With five wins in thirteen races he captured the overall and Junior titles.
The highly coveted ‘Team of the Year’ award was presented to Team WRT by Jacky Ickx. The Belgian team performed strongly at the highest level and managed to win the high-quality FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) in Spa, Fuji and Bahrain. For example, WRT captured the FIA Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Teams. The team was also very successful in GT3. This year the ‘Honorary Mention’, awarded by Yves Bacquelaine, went to Vanessa Maes. Her excellent work at the helm of Spa Grand Prix proved an important factor in ensuring the Belgian GP’s presence on the F1 calendar for the next two years.
