Almost ten years after Michael Schumacher’s tragic skiing accident in Maribel, France, the German’s health remains a mystery. After good friend Jean Todt previously provided an insight, F1 boss Stefano Domenicali now also took the time to shed some light on the situation.
Almost ten years ago, Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher was involved in a serious skiing accident in Meribel, France. The German record world champion fell into a coma and was not expected to leave the hospital until September 2014. Since then he has been staying at his home in Gland, a Swiss municipality on Lake Geneva. It is not clear exactly how he is doing: Schumacher has not appeared in public for ten years and his immediate family keeps his health a secret.
Last week, ex-boss and good friend Jean Todt gave a small update on the health of the now 53-year-old German. “He is no longer the Michael we knew,” he said at the time. Now Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has also responded to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Domenicali worked at Ferrari for several years during Schumacher’s time there, when the German record champion won five of his seven world titles. “It seems like only yesterday that he had his accident in Meribel. What goes on between me and the family is private, but you wouldn’t wish ten years of living like that on even your worst enemy.”

“Verstappen reminds me of Schumacher”
Domenicali sees one person in current Formula 1 who comes close to Schumacher. “Our sport has always been characterized by cycles, linked to a combination of a strong car and an extraordinary driver. That is now the case with Max Verstappen.” “Verstappen is a mature driver in race and qualifying management. He reminds me of Schumacher. Verstappen also leaves nothing for the others.”
