Red Bull Motorsport boss Helmut Marko believes that Max Verstappen has not yet reached his peak in Formula 1.
Last season, Max Verstappen won nineteen out of twenty-two races, putting him third in terms of the number of F1 races won in his career, behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher. However, Helmut Marko believes that there is still more to come from the three-time world champion.
“On all fronts. It’s in his absolute will to win,” Marko told Sky. “He can go to extremes in any situation. As soon as he hears that there might be a penalty for an incident, he increases his lead by 10 seconds.”
“He just immediately gains a second per lap. And he does that neatly and with ease.”
“He is decisive when it comes to tire management. Max can drive incredibly fast and at the limit without overloading the tires. He almost reads the tapes.”
“That was the case again during qualifying in Abu Dhabi, where he went a step further than everyone expected. That’s why I don’t think we have reached our peak yet.”
Naturally, Verstappen’s successes are closely linked to the technical superiority of the Red Bull F1 car, and Marko also praises engine supplier Honda.
“He is very confident, but doesn’t fight anymore when he doesn’t have to and yet he is getting faster and handling the material well,” Marko added. “But I never thought all this was possible and that is why I currently see no limits at the top.”
“I have to thank our employees in England and at Honda. Honda has created an incredibly competitive bike. Moreover, the engine was stable, also in terms of fuel consumption.”
“But such an achievement is only possible in a team where everyone works with full passion, dedication and enthusiasm.”
“And I think that is characteristic of our team. We focus on ourselves and make sure we win as many races as possible.”
