So far, Nio is the only car brand where you can change batteries. That could soon change: Geely, the parent company of Volvo and Polestar, among others, has entered into a partnership with Nio and is more than average interested in battery replacement technology. And then things can suddenly go quickly… Will things happen with the battery changing stations or not? Skeptics say no, because only Nio is still venturing into Europe and that is a tiny player. But that may change, because Nio is entering into a partnership with the Chinese Geely – which includes Volvo, Polestar and Zeekr has under his care. The two car manufacturers will exchange technical knowledge about, among other things, battery packs, charging technology and therefore battery changing. The two companies want to collaborate in the further development of the technology. This means that battery replacement should be done even faster. Currently it takes about 3 minutes for the process to complete. Will more brands bring battery changes to Europe? You will read it first in our free newsletter! Also to Europe? Geely also already has active battery swapping stations, but only in China. Geely currently has approximately 300 of these stations in operation, but the car manufacturer announced in 2021 that this number should grow to 5,000 stations by 2025. It is quite possible that the Chinese want to expand their network abroad. If Geely wants to do this, Western Europe is a logical market to start. The share of electric cars in the fleet is relatively large on our continent, and it can already draw on Nio’s experiences. It now has 28 switching stations in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. The Netherlands has 7. Volvo and Polestar in the picture These European ambitions also include models that support battery changing technology. That is exactly what Geely is going to do: build more cars where you can switch batteries. It is likely that Geely will therefore also make the technology available for its subsidiary brands that are popular in Europe. And then Volvo and… Polestar into the picture and suddenly changing batteries is no longer a niche. So don’t be surprised if you meet your… Volvo or Polestar can visit a Geely battery exchange station to exchange your empty battery for a full one.
