After a lot of time was lost on Friday, the message for all the drivers was to make optimal use of the last practice session to explore the limits of both the car and the circuit. Logically, a lot of mistakes were made because the Las Vegas circuit is brand new for all drivers and the grip level is still constantly changing.
When looking for the limit it was sometimes close to, or even against, the wall. Finding a good setting for both qualifying and the race was also crucial. Taking a gamble can be rewarding, just like in the casinos, but it usually also leads to a loss.
The fact that everyone was searching for the ideal driving line and grip on the track was also evident from the fact that even Max Verstappen seemed to have difficulty finding the right rhythm. The cold temperatures also contribute to difficulty finding grip because getting the tires in the ideal temperature window so that they provide a lot of grip is more difficult.
With a few minutes left on the clock we received a red flag when Alex Albon hit the wall with his Williams F1 car. The session was immediately over and would not be restarted.
George Russell was ultimately the fastest with a second and third fastest time ahead of Oscar Piastri and a surprising Logan Sargeant in the Williams. Max Verstappen rode the fourth fastest time. However, the early end of the session makes it difficult to interpret the lap times, as several drivers were on a fast lap at the time of Albon’s crash. This also includes the Ferraris that are ultimately classified sixteenth and seventeenth. Qualifying for the Las Vegas GP promises to be exciting.
