‘Electric driving is nice, but the price of an EV is still far too high.’ This argument can be discarded, because several new affordable electric cars are on the way. An example is this cute new version of an old icon: the Renault Twingo.
Renault This week at an event, this concept that looks suspiciously similar to the first generation Twingo from the 1990s took the wraps off. We list: the MPV shape, the almost round headlights and taillights, the round door handles and even the three small air intakes on the hood.
With our free newsletter you can stay informed about all the affordable EVs on the way!
Not a direct copy
The air intakes do not have to function as such in the absence of a combustion engine. On the electric concept model of the Twingo, they are used as a style element and show the charging percentage. You can also see from the number of doors that it is not a direct copy of the original. The new Renault Twingo will be a five-door car and not a three-door; the door handles of the rear models are incorporated in the C-pillar, just like on the current electric Twingo.
The interior has not yet been revealed and remains a matter of speculation, although we hope that the new Twingo uses space as smartly as the original Twingo. Strangely enough, Renault CEO Luca de Meo did not mention the old Twingo as an example during the presentation, but the Japanese kei car. He is impressed by the intelligent design of this type of car and wants to make a European version of the Twingo.
Renault Twingo becomes a tour de force
Not only do we enjoy the ugly appearance and the possibly smart interior of the future electric Renault Twingo, the French city car should also be a tour de force in terms of technology. Renault wants to make it the most efficient EV ever and aims for a consumption of 10 kWh per 100 kilometers.
If this consumption is really achieved, the Renault Twingo will be 50 percent more efficient than today’s compact EVs. An additional advantage of this high efficiency is that Renault was able to use a smaller battery without sacrificing too much range. And a smaller battery means lower costs. Renault has not yet said what the range is.
More technical details have not yet been released, but in all likelihood the new Twingo will be based on the same AmpR Small platform that will support both the new Renault 4 and 5.
Renault Twingo (2026) price and introduction
And then of course the price: Renault wants to offer the Twingo for less than 20,000 euros. The French promise that the EV will not cost more than 100 euros per month. Anyone who has become very enthusiastic will have to appeal to his or her patience: the new electric Renault Twingo is not expected until 2026.
Those who do not want to wait until then should make do with the current affordable EV from the Renault Group: the Dacia Spring. Those who want to wait can also go for future competitors such as the Volkswagen ID.1, Tesla Model 2 and Citroën ë-C3.
