Toyota recently opened a can of concept cars, all electric. A sports car, a crazy van, and also an SUV. This Toyota FT-3e could easily be Toyota’s first electric car with the brand’s long-awaited solid-state battery.
A crazy van?
Of course. But we mean this affectionately. The Toyota Kayoibako may look a bit strange, but it is actually a smart car. Just like the two-seater sports car Toyota FT-Se it was at the Japan Mobility Show. Here Toyota showed even more electric stuff. Such as a possible electric successor to the terrain icon Toyota Land Cruiser and an electric pickup. However, the electric concept car that comes closest to production is the Toyota FT-3e.
Toyota FT-3e, talk about crazy
Well, typically Japanese, such a funny name. FT stands for Future Toyota. So the full model name is: Toyota Future Toyota Dash Three E. The name may be strange, but we think the design is very successful. A better version of the Toyota bZ4X.
At 4.86 m long, the Toyota FT-3e is larger than the bZ4X which is 4.69 m long. The wheelbase is approximately 3 m. And to indicate how spacious that is: the huge one Toyota Highlander has a wheelbase of 2.85 m. Also the almost five meter long, new one Volkswagen ID.7 can’t match the wheelbase of the FT-3e. So count on a nice and spacious interior. The width and height are 1.95 and 1.59 m respectively.
No hybrid this time?
No. The Toyota FT-3e is as electric as it gets. Battery-electric that is and not hydrogen-electric like the Toyota Mirai. Nothing further is known about the drivetrain. But don’t be surprised if the FT-3e becomes Toyota’s first EV with the brand’s long-awaited solid-state battery. Toyota recently released the Financial Times know that the production of this dream battery is very close.
Dream battery?
That’s what you can call the solid-state battery. This would give the Toyota FT-3e a range of, hold on, about 1,200 kilometers. Try that with your diesel Toyota Avensis. The solid-state battery also enables faster charging times. Think of 1000 kilometers in just ten minutes. Before the shop assistant at the charging station has prepared your flat white with oat milk and two shots of espresso, it’s already over. Moreover, this type of battery is cheaper to produce, making EVs more affordable. So yeah, dream battery.

A serious Toyota EV, it’s about time
Beats. Toyota is not rushing its EVs. That can be explained. Toyota has been saying for years that an electric car should be developed for the consumer and not because the regulations prescribe this
