Will we finally get a woman in F2 again soon with Sophia Floersch? Floersch said in an interview that he is working hard on a possible F2 participation.
Sophia Floersch, well-known to many motorsport fans, rose to prominence after her harrowing crash in 2018 during an F3 race in Macau, where she collided with a wall. Despite the severity of the crash, Floersch has made a remarkable recovery and is now a member of the Alpine Driver Academy.
Currently competing in Formula 3, Floersch stands as the only woman to have scored points in this racing class. However, at just 23 years old, she has her sights set on transitioning to Formula 2. She understands that the move from Formula 3 to Formula 2 is not a guaranteed one.
If Floersch successfully makes the leap, she will become only the second woman to join the ranks of F2 drivers. Tatiana Calderon was the first, but she struggled to secure points finishes in F2 and ultimately bid farewell to the series in 2022 due to sponsorship constraints. Floersch is aware that talent alone will not be enough to propel her into F2.
Physical preparedness is crucial, a challenge that Floersch asserts she has met. However, the importance of securing necessary sponsorship cannot be overstated. Despite these hurdles, Floersch remains optimistic about her chances of achieving points finishes in F2.
“I’ve competed against many of the drivers currently in F2, as well as those I grew up racing against on karting tracks, some of whom now compete in F4, for example. I feel ready for this next step. I’ve dedicated myself to being physically prepared,” Floersch shared with ‘GPBlog’.
“In addition to budget constraints, success in reaching Formula 2 depends on relationships with teams and partners. The competition is tough, with numerous young drivers vying for spots in Formula 3 and Formula 2. Securing a drive ultimately comes down to chance,” she continued.
Racing for Van Amersfoort Racing, Floersch acknowledges the vital support she receives from the team. She recognizes that continuous hard work is the only path to realizing her F2 aspirations.
“It’s no secret that substantial financial backing is required to compete in F2. Having a supportive team backing me is undoubtedly beneficial. The future remains uncertain, but I will persist in my efforts and trust my management, sponsors, and partners to navigate the journey,” she stated.
“We remain focused on the grind. I continue to give my all, leaving the rest to my team, sponsors, and partners. Success in F2 is the end goal, and we will continue to strive towards achieving it,” Floersch affirmed.
