Lucas Coenen starts on pole position in the French Grand Prix on Sunday. The Husqvarna rider led from start to finish in the MX2 qualifying race. Liam Everts finished second, but was pushed back two places for not respecting the yellow flag.
The free practice and the time practice (in which Everts was the fastest) were completed in dry conditions. But an hour before the start of the MX2 qualifying race, the floodgates above St-Jean d’Angély opened completely. It Puy de Poursay circuit underwent a metamorphosis: lots of mud, deep ruts and very slippery. Sacha Coenen immediately experienced the latter in person. The KTM rider fell in the first corner. Twin brother Lucas fared much better. The Overijsen native – winner of the Galician GP last week – took the holeshot, immediately opened a nice gap and then had the race completely under control. Good for his second pole position of the year.
“The course was dirty and treacherous,” said Lucas. “We had to be constantly careful not to slide away. Fortunately, the holeshot made my job a lot easier. I could keep my glasses on until the end, so I always had pretty good vision. This victory is nice, but it really counts on Sunday. Then I have to be there.”
Not agreed
Liam Everts – always happy when the rain is pouring down – was also right at the front. He shot out of the starting gate in fourth place and a few corners later already matched teammate Adamo. The Lummen resident, smart as he is, did not act too impetuously. He remained patient and in the final phase nicely passed Marc-Antoine Rossi to place two. But that was beyond the control of the FIM stewards. They had seen Everts jump at a yellow flag. And that is forbidden. The Lummen resident was therefore put back two places. “Do I agree? Not really. Just as I started my jump, that marshal started waving his yellow flag. Well, then I can no longer cancel my action,” Everts sighed. “Oh well, I have no choice but to accept it, right?”
