Google is expected to launch its new, affordable smartphone in May. In this overview, we list all the rumors about the Google Pixel 8a for you.
These are the rumors about the Google Pixel 8a
If there’s one company that’s bad at keeping secrets, it’s Google. New products from the search giant are often leaked in detail in advance. This also applies to the Google Pixel 8a, about which we have already read a lot of rumors. This is what we know now about the affordable device.
Rounder design, but still a chin
Renders of the Pixel 8a already appeared months ago. This showed that it will look quite similar to the normal Pixel 8. Compared to the Pixel 7a, the smartphone has a rounder housing, making it look slightly more modern. However, the edges are thicker than their more expensive brother. We still find a considerable ‘chin’, especially under the screen. You probably choose from the colors green, black, and blue.
Small screen with a higher refresh rate
Good news for lovers of small smartphones: the Pixel 8a once again has a (relatively) compact 6.1-inch OLED screen that you can easily operate with one hand. In addition, the refresh rate increases from 90 to 120Hz. This means you can enjoy very smooth images. At first glance, the display even seems as good as that of the Pixel 8. That phone achieves a high peak brightness of 2000 nits. The Pixel 8a’s screen may be less bright.
Faster hardware, faster charging
Like the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the 8a runs on a Tensor G3 chip. It is about 20 to 30 percent faster than the Tensor G2 and uses energy slightly more efficiently. It is an excellent processor, especially for a midrange smartphone. For example, it is faster than the Exynos 1480 from the Samsung Galaxy A55. There is 8GB of RAM, and you can choose from variants with 128 or 256GB of storage.
The device has a battery with a capacity of approximately 4500 mAh. According to rumors, the Pixel 8a can charge at 27 Watts while its predecessor was stuck at 18 Watts. Refilling battery juice wirelessly is also possible, but it is a lot slower. Charging with 27 Watts is not very fast. A cheaper device like the OnePlus Nord 3 produces no less than 80 watts.
The same cameras as the Pixel 7a
According to rumors, the Google Pixel 8a will have a better screen, a faster processor, and it charges faster. Unfortunately, the cameras don’t seem to be getting an upgrade this year. That’s not surprising. With the Pixel 7a, Google opted for a new 64-megapixel main camera, which is a lot better than the old 12-megapixel copy of the Pixel 6a. It can last another year just fine.
The 13-megapixel wide-angle lens is now a fairly old beast. A telephoto lens to zoom in is, of course, missing because it is not even present on the more expensive Pixel 8. Yet you cannot really wish for better cameras in this price range.
Higher price
Google already raised prices last year, and that now seems to happen again. According to previous reports, the Pixel 8a will cost a minimum of 569 euros. That would be 60 euros more than the Pixel 7a in 2023, which you can now buy for €389.
This would put the new Pixel at the top of the midrange market. We can no longer call it affordable. You may receive software updates for up to seven years, just like with the normal Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. However, we don’t know that for sure yet. In any case, it is a steep price, especially since you can now buy the normal Pixel 8 for €589.
We’ll know for sure next month. The search giant will most likely present the Pixel 8a during the Google I/O 2024 developer conference, which will take place on May 14 this year.
