Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has unveiled a special helmet he will drive in Japan this weekend to honor Jules Bianchi, who died in 2014.
Jules Bianchi, like Charles Leclerc, was part of the Ferrari Driver Academy and Leclerc was a kind of godson for Bianchi. Bianchi seemed destined to one day race for Ferrari in Formula 1, but disaster struck in 2014 during the Japanese GP. During the race in October of that year, it rained particularly heavily and Bianchi in his Marussia F1 car skidded off the track and ended up under a crane truck.
Bianchi was seriously injured, was in a coma for months and eventually died about nine months later. Ultimately, Bianchi’s fatal crash was the basis for several new safety measures in Formula 1, including the introduction of the Halo on F1 cars, which has since saved several lives.
This weekend several drivers and teams will honor Bianchi, in particular Charles Leclerc who will drive with a special F1 helmet. Following the death of Jules Bianchi, starting number 17 was permanently withdrawn by the FIA.
A special helmet in memory of a very special person for me.
10 years this year since we have lost Jules here in Japan.

I miss you and Ill do everything to bring that helmet on the top step of the podium on Sunday. pic.twitter.com/aT7QVbtedJ— Charles Leclerc (@Charles_Leclerc) April 4, 2024
Charles Leclerc, the talented Ferrari driver, has chosen to honor the memory of Jules Bianchi with a special helmet design for the upcoming race in Japan. Bianchi, who tragically passed away in 2014 following a serious accident during the Japanese Grand Prix, was not only a fellow member of the Ferrari Driver Academy but also a mentor and guiding figure for Leclerc.
Bianchi’s promising career was cut short when he lost control of his Marussia F1 car in treacherous wet conditions, leading to a catastrophic crash that left him in a coma for several months before his untimely death. The impact of Bianchi’s accident was profound and led to significant safety improvements in Formula 1, including the implementation of the Halo device on F1 cars, a safety feature that has proven instrumental in preventing serious injuries in subsequent incidents.
As the Formula 1 community commemorates the anniversary of Jules Bianchi’s passing, Charles Leclerc pays tribute to his friend and mentor by showcasing a specially designed helmet that reflects their close bond and shared memories. In a heartfelt message on social media, Leclerc expressed his deep connection to Bianchi and his commitment to honoring his legacy by striving for success on the track.
The significance of Jules Bianchi’s impact on the world of Formula 1 is further underscored by the decision of the FIA to retire car number 17 in his memory, recognizing his enduring influence and the lasting imprint he left on the sport.
Charles Leclerc’s gesture of remembrance and dedication to Jules Bianchi highlights the importance of honoring the memory of those who have contributed to the sport of Formula 1 and left a lasting legacy. As Leclerc prepares to race in Japan with Bianchi’s spirit guiding him, fans and spectators will witness a poignant tribute to a remarkable talent whose presence is still felt within the F1 community.
