Today is Samsung’s official shipping date for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, although it has been available a bit early in some places. So now that you can pick one up at a store without the need to pre-order, you might be wondering how that titanium build is holding up, as well as the new Gorilla Armor.
Fortunately, Zack at JerryRigEverything has just released a video putting the S24 Ultra through its traditional ‘durability test’. This test involves scratches, burns, and, of course, the bend test. Let’s grab some popcorn and watch it together.
If for whatever reason you couldn’t watch, here’s a quick overview. First, it’s important to note that Samsung doesn’t mention what grade of titanium it uses – Apple uses grade 5, which is one of the two most common grades. Grade 5 titanium is more expensive than grade 2 titanium, and therefore companies that use grade 5 generally brag about it, while those that use grade 2 stay quiet.
We can’t be sure if that’s the case with Samsung – after all, it has massively upgraded the speakers in the S24 series without telling anyone. Anyway, onto the test. The Gorilla Armor glass on top of the screen scratches fine at level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, but there’s a twist. There are no “deeper grooves at level 7” this time. The marks are there, they’re just not as deep as on other types of glass, so the Gorilla Armor definitely appears to be more than just hype. Those deeper grooves don’t appear until level 8, which is a first in the mobile world.
The titanium is not scratch-resistant, so it actually scratches. It is unclear whether the buttons are titanium or an aluminum alloy. The S Pen comes apart to show its insides, and pixels last about 30 seconds under a flame before turning white and not recovering.
Finally, the S24 Ultra survives the bend test with flying colors. There is a small bend when you bend from both sides, but there are absolutely no cracks whatsoever.
