Lewis Hamilton thinks that winning an eighth world title in a dominant Red Bull car would not mean much to him.
For the second year in a row, Lewis Hamilton failed to win a race and had to outpace Max Verstappen in the hunt for an eighth world title. Last year, George Russell managed to save the furniture for Mercedes by winning the Brazilian GP, but last season the counter remained at zero and now all hope rests on the W15, the car for 2024.
In the run-up to the Abu Dhabi GP, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner launched the rumor that he was approached by Hamilton’s entourage for a seat with his team. But the seven-time world champion categorically denied this and signed a two-year contract extension with Mercedes earlier this year.
He also believes that it would be better to win his eighth world title with Mercedes than to switch to Red Bull.
“I think about the contract and it has shown my commitment to the team,” Hamilton explained to the media. “Let’s be realistic, every driver who races here dreams of driving a winning car and I think in my younger years, when I might not have had much success in the McLaren days, it was a lot more attractive.”
“When I think about it from a racing perspective, when I moved to this team, I enjoyed moving from a more successful team to a team that had not yet had success with the vision to grow and build with a team, because when we did that, it was such a better feeling.”
“Every driver here looks at the Red Bull car and would love to drive that car, and I’m not saying I wouldn’t love to drive that car and feel how good it is, every driver would love to feel that.”
“We have had two difficult years and if we work to become that car, it will be a much better feeling than getting into the best car.”
“That wouldn’t mean much to me, in terms of getting into the car that is the most dominant of all time.”
“Working with my team to beat them would be better for my legacy.”
