Artificial intelligence (AI) and large language model-based (LLM) chatbots are among the biggest trends for 2023. OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT has been a major part of this trend, although it poses a threat to Google. In response, Google launched its own chatbot called Bard, but faced criticism about its accuracy. Plans for a new and improved chatbot named Gemini were delayed to 2024, according to a report by The Information.
According to the report, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai decided to delay the launch of Gemini due to subpar responses to certain queries. The launch has been moved to early 2024, and a series of planned launch events have been canceled.
Google had not publicly announced the launch of Gemini, but it would have been a significant move for the company. It would have demonstrated Google’s ability to compete with OpenAI in generative AI.
Google’s Gemini: A More Powerful Chatbot than ChatGPT?
Gemini is meant to be a multi-modal generative AI chatbot that can understand and process different types of data while generating responses in the desired format. Google first discussed Gemini at its annual I/O developer conference in May.
Gemini is positioned as a more powerful alternative to ChatGPT, which currently poses a threat to Google. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis told Wired in June that Gemini would offer more than just generative AI and would include techniques such as planning and problem-solving, which ChatGPT lacks.
Despite OpenAI’s efforts to address these issues with its own technology, Google is taking a cautious approach to the launch of Gemini and continuing to prioritize its development.
