Lewis Hamilton has commented on the conflict between Israel and Hamas occurring in Gaza.
The seven-time world champion expressed his extreme disappointment in the way international governments are handling the war in Gaza. He also mentioned the difficulty of focusing on racing while witnessing the world events.
“It is a unique time for us, as we are in a sort of bubble here,” said Hamilton in Abu Dhabi. “We travel to different places and there is a lot of positivity in our small bubble. But it’s challenging to wake up every day knowing that thousands of children are dying and feeling powerless to do anything about it.”
He went on to express his disappointment in how the rest of the world carries on as usual while international governments seemingly do little to resolve the conflict. Hamilton emphasized that considering the year is 2023 and the lessons from the past, it feels as if no progress has been made.
Hamilton mentioned the difficulty of carrying on with work while facing the constant exposure to the negativity surrounding the conflict on social media and in the news.
He admitted that all the events have left him emotionally drained, but he is looking forward to the upcoming season’s preparations.
“I’m not yet exhausted,” Hamilton continued. “It’s clearly going to be a long season. I think with all the negativity in the world, it’s also been quite exhausting to maintain a positive mindset throughout the year.”
