Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff believes that Lewis Hamilton will be able to compete for the world title again after two seasons without victories. As a seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton has a wealth of experience and, according to Wolff, definitely has the abilities necessary for success.
“If we are able to give him a good car then he will fight for the world title again, I have no doubt about that,” said Toto Wolff after the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi.
Lewis Hamilton has not been able to secure a victory since his defeat at the 2021 F1 season finale in Abu Dhabi. According to Toto Wolff, this has much more to do with the car that Mercedes makes available to him rather than the capabilities of Lewis Hamilton as a driver.
During the last race weekend in Abu Dhabi, Hamilton encountered many difficulties at the Yas Marina Circuit. He only qualified eleventh and finished the race seventh.
“For whatever reason it is difficult to get the car into the so-called ‘sweet spot’. You also saw it with Carlos, who never really performed well this weekend, the same with Lewis,” said Wolff. “As for Lewis, he had a bad weekend. But I think it has nothing to do with the fact that he is the best driver in the world.”
“It’s clear that when you have an F1 car like now you know it’s never easy. There are good and bad weekends.”
“But every time I see Lewis has someone ahead of him in his sights and it’s all about winning the race, that’s when the real Lewis comes to life. We just have to give him a car that is good.”
