Aston Martin started the 2023 F1 season very strongly, but ultimately had to settle for fifth place in the constructors’ championship at the end of the season. According to Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin deserved more than fifth place.
During the first eight races of the season, Fernando Alonso stood on the podium no fewer than six times. Aston Martin was the surprise of the season. Aston Martin was even second in the championship for a long time, but it ended the season fifth and that is quite a disappointment.
“Fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, which hurts a bit because I think we were better than that,” Alonso said after the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi. “At the beginning of the season we had hoped for a better result.”
Thanks to his seventh place, Alonso himself finished with the same number of points as Charles Leclerc, but because the ‘best results this season’ were taken into account, Alonso finished the F1 season fourth in the drivers’ championship.
“When I saw on the big screen that Leclerc was second I thought he finished ahead of me,” Alonso admitted. “But apparently we have the same number of points and he had more third places or something.”
