Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff had to look again for explanations for the lower performance after qualifying for the Abu Dhabi GP. Wolff is tired of looking for explanations for the W14’s inconsistent performance and will be happy when Mercedes has its new car next year.
After setting the fastest time in the first and third practice sessions, when temperatures were warmer, Mercedes had to settle for fourth and eleventh fastest times during qualifying. Lewis Hamilton’s early exit in Q2 was particularly hard and Mercedes continues to perform inconsistently.
“We just didn’t get it right, everything didn’t fall into place,” Wolff told Sky Sports F1. “This was what was in the car, but expectations were higher. I’m tired of having to explain why things didn’t go well.”
“We were good when it was hot, not when it was cold, in the previous races it was the opposite.”
“I’m happy that this is the last qualifying of the season and that we will have a new car next year.”
