Samsung is a pioneer in AMOLED screens for smartphones and tablets. The new generation of displays is known as Pholed and offers a significant advantage.
Samsung is working on PLED screens
For many years, (high-end) smartphones have been equipped with OLED screens capable of displaying colors accurately and offering infinite contrast. Individual pixels can be switched on and off, resulting in lower energy consumption compared to LCD panels. Samsung uses these screens in its own smartphones and also supplies them to other manufacturers.
Over the next few years, we will see a transition from OLED to PHOLED screens, as reported by the South Korean publication, The Elec. These panels consume less energy, thereby extending a phone’s battery life. The use of blue phosphorescent materials allows the material to continue glowing for a while after being illuminated.
Current OLED screens contain red, green, and blue phosphorescent sub-pixels, but the light efficiency of the latter is much lower. The manufacturer has been diligently developing this technology to enhance the lifespan of these blue pixels. While positive progress has been made, the technology is not yet suitable for product use.
Not yet in Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Fold 6
Samsung reportedly plans to use this new screen type in the 2024 foldable devices, but it seems unlikely. Therefore, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 will feature a ‘regular’ foldable AMOLED screen. The Elec suggests that the first smartphones with a PLED screen may be expected in 2025 or 2026.
