Qualifying for the Abu Dhabi GP was held just as the sun was setting and this provided very nice images of the Yas Marina Circuit. The F1 pilots were of course not there to take images, but to set the fastest possible lap time during the last qualifying of the season.

The biggest surprise, however, was Carlos Sainz, who was eliminated in Q1 with a sixteenth fastest time. Sainz crashed heavily yesterday during the second practice session.

In Q2 we saw Max Verstappen set the fastest time, ahead of Lando Norris in the McLaren. However, we also got a surprise in Q2 as Lewis Hamilton was eliminated with the eleventh fastest time. Hamilton had already made it clear prior to qualifying that it would be a close call whether or not to advance to Q3. However, the difference with teammate George Russell, who managed to qualify for Q3 without any problems with a fourth fastest time, was large.

The first series of fast runs in Q3 saw Max Verstappen claim provisional pole position with a time of 1:23.445, ahead of both McLarens which were several tenths slower. Charles Leclerc had a disappointing first run because with a ninth fastest time, Leclerc had to hope that his second run would be a lot better.

Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc can therefore start the last race of the season together from the front row on Sunday.
