During the second practice session at the Yas Marina Circuit, Carlos Sainz suddenly flew off the track and crashed heavily into the TecPro Barriers. Fortunately, Carlos Sainz was able to get out of his badly damaged F1 car without serious injuries and he has a suspicion why he flew off the track.
“I feel good,” Sainz said after his crash. “It was a fairly serious crash, but with the safety of these cars you can come out of such serious crashes unscathed. Obviously I’m a bit stiff but nothing to worry about.”
“We changed a few things between the first and second practice sessions and that probably had an influence, although I’m obviously not going to go into detail. Unfortunately I couldn’t keep the car under control.”
“Suddenly there was a ‘snap’ and it’s at that moment you feel like you’re completely a passenger and you wish maybe you had done something different.”
According to Sainz, a bump in the track caused the crash. Sainz also stated that he was almost outwitted by the same bump during the first practice session.
“For some reason the circuit has changed quite a bit, there are two bumps,” said Sainz. “One at the exit of the second corner and one at the beginning of the third corner, bumps that cause problems with this new generation of cars.”
“I was almost outwitted in the first practice session, I had to adjust a few things in the car’s setup to try to get rid of it.”
“For a reason, I was surprised in that lap. It must have been a certain angle or the way I took that bump that made me become a passenger.”
“We have seen before that with this generation of cars, such small bumps can cause fairly serious crashes.”
