The Mercedes F1 team has announced the immediate departure of Mike Elliott, the previous Chief Technical Officer.
Mike Elliott joined Mercedes in 2012 as the head of the aerodynamics department and later became the technical director in July 2021, succeeding James Allison. However, due to a disappointing start to the season, it was decided earlier this year that they would switch positions again.
In a statement, Mercedes confirmed Elliott’s departure, noting that he will be taking on a new challenge. However, he will first enter a period of “garden leave,” during which he is not allowed to work for any competitors.
“It has been a great privilege in my career to be part of the Mercedes team,” said Elliott in response. “During that time, I have witnessed the team’s growth from a group of individuals aiming to win races to securing eight consecutive constructors’ titles. I am proud to have contributed to this success.”
Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff reacted to Elliott’s departure with mixed feelings. “It is with mixed feelings that I say goodbye today,” said Wolff. “Mike is an incredibly intelligent technical mind and a great team player. He has made significant contributions not only to the development of winning cars but also to shaping the team’s culture.”
Wolff acknowledged that Elliott is ready for new adventures outside of Mercedes and expressed gratitude for his efforts, dedication, and expertise during his eleven years with the team. The Mercedes team wishes Elliott the best for his future endeavors.
After 11 incredible years, Chief Technical Officer Mike Elliott has chosen to depart the team.
Mike has been one of the pillars of the team’s achievements, and we thank him for everything he has brought to the team.
We wish you the best of luck with your next chapter, Mike!
