According to Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff, the team’s ‘strategic forecaster’ insinuated that they could finish first and second at the Singapore GP. When you see one car crash and the other car finish third, that is a bit of a disappointment.
“We were very strong,” said Toto Wolff. “We could have won the race.”
“We could have finished first and second on our own and that is what we have to take away from this race. It will energize and motivate us that we were so strong on this particular track. Not everything is bad.”
“When you see P1 and P2 appear on the ‘planner’ at times and you think about that, this could have been an incredible day and it wasn’t. But I prefer to remember the positive aspects of this weekend and then return home and say it was good.”
However, according to Toto Wolff it remains difficult to estimate the real power ratio, because for a large part of the race the pace was pushed at the front.
“I don’t think we saw the full speed at the front, but from our perspective it was a great race weekend from Russell,” says Wolff of George Russell who was much faster than the Ferraris at the end of the race but failed to win the race and eventually crashed. “He was the one who was brave enough to decide that he was going to go for it and try to win the race. In the end there were a few laps short.”
