Apple recently launched its new iPhones, including the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. During the event, Apple spent quite some time showcasing the gaming ability of the brand-new A17 Pro chipset. This is the first time the Cupertino tech giant has used the Pro suffix for a mobile chipset and is truly committed to it. The company demonstrated the capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro by running games like Resident Evil 4 Remake and Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Notably, the Pro variants this year support hardware-accelerated ray-tracing for dynamic lighting effects.
Popular gaming website IGN recently interviewed Jeremy Sandmel, Senior Director of GPU Software, Tim Millet, VP of Platform Architecture, and Kaiann Drance, VP of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing. These executives claim that the iPhone 15 Pro will be the best gaming console. However, in typical Apple fashion, they emphasized that the native AAA gaming support is not meant to compete with consoles, but rather to provide developers with the best tools to bring their AAA titles to iPhone and offer users the best gaming experience.
Apple Working With Developers to Bring More AAA Game Titles to iPhone 15 Pro
One of the biggest highlights of the Wonderlust Event held by Apple was the demonstration of the Resident Evil 4 Remake and Assassin’s Creed Mirage running on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. Apple has introduced raytracing on these iPhones for stunning gaming visuals and support for “AAA” console games. The Cupertino-based tech giant announced that Resident Evil 4 Remake, Resident Evil Village, Death Stranding, and the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be supported natively on the iPhone 15 Pro series. We can expect more AAA gaming titles to come to the iPhone lineup.
In an interview with Taylor Lyles of IGNthe team behind the development of the iPhone 15 Pro claimed that the iPhone 15 Pro series will be the best game console. Jeremy Sandmel made this claim after Kaiann Drance said, “I think they say the best game console is the one you have with you.” This response came when they were asked how the iPhone 15 Pro compares console-wise against the PlayStation 5 or Xbox.
Elaborating on the console aspect, the executives revealed that their focus was on working with developers and bringing additional AAA titles to the iPhone 15 Pro instead of competing with consoles. They further claimed that with the iPhone 15 Pro, they are trying to deliver a smartphone that is also a powerful game console that you can always have with you.
The Apple executive also confirmed that iPhone 15 Pro models can play AAA gaming titles on an external 4K HDR display. However, it all depends on developers taking advantage of the tools provided by the company, including the new Pro 6-core GPU, advanced MetalFX, and more. When asked if these AAA titles will also be available on Apple Silicon iPads and Macs, the executive emphasized that the building blocks are all there and Apple will work with developers to make it happen.
Apple showcased the AAA games being played using a Backbone controller during the launch event. When asked if a controller is the best way to play these games on the iPhone 15 Pro, the executives explained that they will allow both controllers and on-screen controls. It will depend on the user’s choice and what developers believe offers the best gaming experience.
Using Death Stranding as an example, Apple stated that the game is designed to be played using a controller, and users can do that. But if developers want to offer native touchscreen controls on iPhones, they have several software programming APIs and Apple’s support to do so. For Apple, it’s all about offering the right gaming experience to iPhone users.
One concern raised by Lyles about AAA gaming on the iPhone was whether these games would cause overheating. The executives quickly explained that developers can optimize the powerful A17 Pro chipset and the new GPU to prevent overheating. Apple provides tools like MetalFX for developers to optimize the entire gaming experience on the iPhone 15 Pro while maintaining gameplay quality. According to Apple, the display has excellent scaling technology, and the new GPU is designed for efficient upscaling. With features like raytracing, mesh shading, and advanced computing architecture algorithms, Apple is working with developers to offer high-performance gaming without compromising battery life and effective thermal management.
