After the Singapore GP, Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur praised Carlos Sainz’s performance and the way he managed to win the race. Vasseur and Ferrari said they also focused entirely on their own performance.
“I wasn’t focused on Red Bull, we have to do our utmost, wherever Red Bull is,” Vasseur looks back on the race. “In terms of management, Carlos has done a fantastic job. From the first lap he controlled the race, he did very well.”
Ferrari chose to start teammate Charles Leclerc on the soft tire compound. The soft tire offered more grip at the start and Leclerc managed to pass George Russell. The Monegasque was an extra buffer between Sainz and the rest of the driver field, which was strategically important.
“The plan was to get Charles into P2, we had two cars on the right side of the grid, which was an advantage,” Vasseur explains Ferrari’s strategy. “We decided to put Charles on the soft bathing compound so he could take second place. Everything went well until the safety car, but then we had to pit.”
“It was very busy in the pit lane and we lost position because of that, but otherwise it went very well.”
