Starting with Mac computers, Apple aims to demonstrate that its gadgets can attract real gamers. Recently, the company’s senior managers, in an interview with IGN, explained why the new iPhone 15 Pro should be considered the best gaming console in the world.
IGN’s Taylor Lyles spoke with Jeremy Sandmel (Apple’s Senior Director of GPU Software), Tim Millett (VP of Platform Architecture), and Caiann Drance (VP of Global iPhone Marketing). During the conversation, Millett emphasized that Apple does not intend to directly compete with specific consoles, such as the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S. Instead, the company is focusing on creating a platform and tools that will directly appeal to game developers.
“I think we’re more focused on the developers and the games themselves, and less on competing with consoles. I think the console is just a convenient way to talk about classic games and the types of games that developers are targeting. We’ve done everything we can to try to provide the same set of tools to developers, and we’re working diligently with them,” said Tim Millett.
When asked about overheating from demanding games, Caiann Drance explained that since they develop processors and smartphone designs in-house, it gives them an understanding of the real-world performance that will be manifested in certain scenarios. This allows them to determine if the device can maintain the required level of frame rate and other components. Tim Millett added that, in theory, developers could “push that amazing GPU to its limits and try to overheat the phone,” but Apple won’t allow that. Instead, they offer a number of tools like MetalFX to maximize performance and ensure smooth operation of the phone.
“I think the best gaming console is the one you have with you at all times,” said Tim Millett, while Jeremy Sandmel boldly stated that the iPhone 15 Pro would be the best gaming console.
Let’s not forget that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max house the world’s first 3-nanometer processor, the A17 Pro, with hardware support for ray tracing. By the end of this year, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Resident Evil Village, and Death Stranding will be available on these smartphones, and the new Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be released in the first half of 2024.
